She finished this quilt the year before I joined the Guild. It now belongs to her Granddaughter. Dot has been one of my quilting idols since I first met her. Since I was working on my first appliqué project today I took the opportunity to ask Dot to look at my work and give me some critical feedback and she did! Here's the proof.
Today was a fabulous day! In case you have forgotten from the the 14 times I mentioned it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I was at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts for the Winterthur quilt exhibit. It's a wonderful exhibit. We were not allowed to take photos so you will have to take my word for it. There isn't a quilt in the exhibit more recent than about 1900. There are beautiful examples of American quilts and it was a real treat to see a quilt exhibit in a fine art museum. When this exhibit closes the next special exhibit will be Picasso!

In fact,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], her work is so special that one of her quilts was chosen for a special exhibit that is highlighting local quilters. They are displaying two quilts at a time throughout the duration of the Winterthur exhibit. Dot's is the first to be shown. You can click on this photo to see a larger image. The photo isn't very good because the lighting was dim here but you get the picture. It's a spectacular quilt. I should have taken a couple of close up shots. She combined hand appliqué, hand quilting and ink drawings (in the 4 corner blocks) in this quilt. I vividly remember the first time I saw this quilt at a Guild meeting and I was in awe!
How about that! I think she would tell me that my gaps between stitches are still too wide. I'll see if I can get another critique Tuesday night at the meeting.
Thank you,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Dot! You are the best!
I'll show you the front Wednesday. Meanwhile, I've got to get back to my appliqué which,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so far, I love doing!
Our Chapter of the Richmond Quilters Guild, Country School Quilters,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], did the quilting bee demo today. It's always fun to catch up with my friends from the Guild. But it was extra special because one of my favorite members was there. Dot Holloway has made some of the most beautiful quilts I have ever seen. Her appliqué and her quilting is perfect.
